No more tea chat?

I am sad to say that in the next few days, we will be winding down the Tea Villa Tea Chat site. We had high hopes in this tea community, but we just couldnt get enough people to join in. So we will be closing it down for now. We have plans on bringing it back up in the future.

On the upside, this great tea blog will remain and we will be updating you with news and other goings on within the industry.

Oolong me this tea oracle

Are all teas created equal?

Quick answer. Sorta. Long answer. Kinda sorta.

Most of the teas that you regularly hear about such as the white tea, green tea and black tea are all different sides of the same leaf. They are all derived from the Camellia sinensis plant. The difference lies in how long the leafs are roasted.

So why then is green tea so popular?

It's all about PR.

White tea. Green tea. Red tea. Black tea. What about Oolong tea? There is so much hoopla over green tea and white tea, about all of their health benefits ranging from weight loss, lowering cholesterol, and the thousands of other benefits.

But what about the lonely oolong tea?

Is it not from the same plant?

Is it not steeped?

From all of the reconaissance we've been doing it seems that oolong tea has had somewhat of a bad rap. This is mainly due to the off taste for the tea when brewed. We found the majority of tea drinkers prefer to drink scented or flavored green tea. There aren't too many flavored oolong teas because oolong teas tend to be on the more traditional end. Not sure why, but it could be that no one was really daring enough to sell it using the same scents used on green teas and black teas. This means that the tastes goes from having an earthy tone to a more robust woodsy flavor. This range of flavors hasn't really been palatable. But sometimes, thinking outside of the box gets you a great tasting tea like the Phoenix Oolong tea. This tea doesn't taste like other oolong teas, but it is! It has a woodsy undertone with some fruit flavoring.

Oolong is the underdog of the tea world. Not many people know that it too is high in anti oxidants and also has all of the same health benefits of green tea. It just hasn't gotten any of the press. So I'm here to spread the good word.

Oolong is good. Oolong is great. Oolong is yummy! Oolong is healthy! Oolong is better than green tea!

So put down the same old green tea and say hello to Oolong!

Long tail of the business end

The founder of excite has an interesting blog entry at Bnoopy regarding the long tail end on how to make money off of your customers. It seems that while at Excite.com they made their money off of the 3% of searches because those were the most searched while 97% of their searches were one time searches. They couldn't figure out how to monetize that traffic. Then Overture and Google came along and figured it out. Well Overture did it first, but Google did it better. Anyhow, this is an interesting insight, as it really shows that businesses can succeed so long as you are not trying to compete for the same small piece of the pie.

One thing as an entrepreneur myself is to figure out how to make as many sells, in my current case, the tea industry, and see what area of the tea industry is not being met. I feel that we did this with the ability to create custom tea blends without having to purchase a large amount and without incurring any type of setup fees. This has proven to be pretty successful for those that are willing to try to create their own custom tea blends. But most of our customers just choose to drink what we have on hand. So what can the long tail end be for those in the tea industry?

It could be bagged loose leaf teas, but there are already big players in this arena. Could it be bottled teas? Here too are already many players addressing this business area.

What could it be? The only thing I can think of is the specialty tea business. Of which I can't get into because these are trade secrets but there has to be something that we can do online that isn't being addressed. There are some recipes that we have put up in our Tea Villa Tea Community.

Why not? Tea is increasingly becoming the drink of choice among the many that drink coffee. Just take a look around at your office and see how many people prefer to drink tea, especially if some good ones were offered by the company.

Aside from the obvious reasons to drink to coffee like the many health benefits but its the cool thing to do!
